Electric Car Information
Charging
Where do I charge?
The CODA can be recharged in any standard 120V outlet, but we recommend charging from an installed 240V wall unit, which is wired into a 240V circuit by an electrician.
How long does it take to charge?
Charge time is dependent on how much battery energy has been discharged. From 90% discharged, the vehicle will charge in about six hours3 from a level-two 240V / 30AMP source, which is what most people will use. Charging for a 50-mile commute takes an average of two hours.2
How much does it cost to charge?
Based on the average off-peak cost of electricity in the U.S., the cost to fully charge at night is under three dollars.5
Is there an optimal time to charge?
Most utilities have the lowest rates after 9 p.m.— which CODA consumers should take advantage of.
Don't charging stations need to be built before people will buy EVs?
No. While charging stations will make it more convenient for people to charge on the go, this infrastructure need not be in place before people can buy and use electric cars. People with garages or outdoor outlets can simply charge at home overnight, just like a cell phone.
Manufacturing
Where is the all-electric CODA made?
The all-electric CODA is final assembled in California and features components and subsystems manufactured all over the world. The majority of the vehicle’s key electric drive components are manufactured in the United States.
Our chassis and body (glider) are manufactured at an existing facility we lease and operate in China, where CODA engineers maintain strict control over quality and safety. Following this process, we ship the glider to California, where we install the energy storage system, and complete vehicle assembly. The final inspection and quality assurance processes also take place in California.
Is CODA a Chinese company?
No, CODA is based in the United States, specificially Los Angeles, CA.
What is CODA’s relationship with China?
CODA has a contract manufacturing agreement with a Chinese automaker ChangAn Hafei to build the glider for the 100% EV sedan. CODA also has a joint venture relationship with Lishen, the world’s fifth largest battery manufacturer, for their battery manufacturing.
Is CODA owned by ChangAn Hafei?
No, ChangAn Hafei does not own one share in CODA or its subsidiaries. ChangAn Hafei is a contract manufacturer with no equity stake in CODA.
Is the CODA built in China?
Many part of the CODA EV are built in China, as well as top tier suppliers from around the world including the US, UK and Japan. The glider (body of the car), batteries and battery pack are the largest vehicle elements and they are made in China. These parts are shipped to Northern California where they are assembled, inspected for quality assurance and shipped to consumers.
Safety
How safe is the CODA?
The CODA is equipped with both active and passive safety systems, including six standard airbags, an occupant detection system, Anti-Lock Braking system (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and an emergency call center that will be notified if you've been in a crash.
Does the CODA have airbags?
The CODA has six standard airbags: advanced dual-stage front driver and passenger, seat-mounted side impact, and roof-mounted curtain.
Battery
What kind of battery chemistry does the CODA use?
The CODA uses a lithium-iron phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry, a lithium-ion derivative, which has excellent thermal durability, stability, safety and performance characteristics.
Where are the batteries located?
The battery pack is integrated into structure of the chassis, positioned underneath the seats and floorpan.
Will the battery work in extreme temperatures?
Yes, the CODA’s battery features an active thermal management system, which keeps the battery running at an optimal temperature range in a variety of weather conditions—even when the car is parked.
Does the CODA's battery charge when the brakes are applied?
Yes. The CODA utilizes a regenerative braking system to recoup energy. Instead of wasting kinetic energy every time you brake, the system feeds that energy back into the battery, thus storing it for future use.
Who manufactures the battery?
A joint venture between CODA and Lishen, one of the world’s top producers of rechargeable lithium-ion cells– and a supplier to Motorola®, Samsung®, Apple®, and many other electronics and power tool manufacturers.
Where is the battery currently manufactured?
A joint venture between CODA and Lishen, currently manufactures the CODA sedan’s batteries in Tianjin, China. We plan to build a battery manufacturing facility in Central Ohio that will supply batteries to the North American market within the next two years.
Will electric car batteries end up in a landfill and be worse for the environment?
No. Once our batteries have exceeded their useful lifespan in vehicles, they can be used for other applications that do not have the performance requirements of automotive-grade batteries, like stationary power storage. At the end of the battery’s life, it will be recycled.
Vehicle Questions
Does the CODA come with a warranty?
Yes, The CODA will be backed by a 3-year / 36,000-mile new vehicle warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and 10 year/100,000-mile limited battery warranty.
How far will the CODA travel between charges?
The CODA features a real-world driving range of up to 150 miles on a single charge (US06 test cycle)2
Does the CODA require any gas?
No, the vehicle is 100% electric-powered.
How fast is the CODA?
We electronically limit the CODA’s top speed to 85 MPH to maximize its battery range.
